She is an Oakland based mixed media artist whose work blends abstraction and storytelling. Her creative inspiration comes from deep observation of her environment, ephemera, and nature. She is committed to supporting arts initiatives for youth and adults that engage a range of senses, emotions, and inspire dialogue and curiosity. Cybele has worked in numerous art centers, community programs, and elementary schools promoting and teaching interdisciplinary arts classes. She graduated from California State University Northridge with a B.A. in a Special Major: <em>Visual and Creative Communication<\/em>. In 2018 she received a certificate in Social Emotional Arts through the Arts &amp; Healing Initiative (UCLArts &amp; Healing) to further promote the therapeutic benefits of the arts. Michelle believes art is a powerful tool for promoting joy and wellbeing. She is an advocate for art accessibility, confident that everyone can make art and benefit from making art.&nbsp;She\u2019s served many Bay Area and Los Angeles arts organizations, including the non-profit&nbsp; <strong>BE<\/strong><em>MOVING<\/em> as a photographer. She has had her work in several local art shows and&nbsp; plans to continue working in the arts and showing her work locally. Currently she works at JCAS caring for the resident reptiles and assisting the teaching artist team. She plans to go to college and pursue a career in underwater welding which will enhance her skills at metal bending for consignment pieces. She has always been active in the art scene no matter if it\u2019s music or drawing. Bill also teaches at the Junior Center. He graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, where he was both a pre-med and a major in Anthropology. She lived in San Francisco for 15 years, before moving to Oakland in 2011. Denise expresses her creative language through painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, and mixed-media collage\/assemblage. She holds a BFA in Photography from Academy of Art College in San Francisco, and a MA in Transformative Arts from John F. Kennedy University in Berkeley, California. She is also a grief and trauma informed, certified teacher of Faces of Your Soul mask-making. Denise served as a Teaching Assistant in the Visual Art department at Berkeley City College, has taught workshops and classes for adults and children at local art centers, schools, healing retreats, and most recently out of her home studio, Wood Rabbit Studios. She loves to dance, garden, read magical books, build public altars, and be inspired by her students. She holds a B.S. in Sustainable Architecture &amp; Urban Studies from the University of Minnesota and an MFA from the California College of the Arts. Leyla\u2019s ethos centers material reclamation, environmental justice, and the belief that creativity is a powerful tool for collective transformation, self-expression, and healing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her practice explores craft as a vehicle for re-imagining our relationship to everyday materials. As an art teacher, she encourages students to see everyday objects as opportunities for creative innovation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Leyla currently works with&nbsp;<em>Oakland Allied Knowledge for Climate Action<\/em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>All-Hands: Community-Driven Preparedness for Climate Action<\/em>&nbsp;to support community-led approaches to climate resilience. He was born and raised in the small town of Agua Dulce, Texas. He attended Texas A&amp;M University-Kingsville and received his BFA in 2012. Garcia attended California College of the Arts &amp; Crafts and obtained his MFA in 2015. I create and practice art that honors my indigenous Mayan culture, traditions, and family history. My art is a celebration of Latin cultural identity and also a reflection on the loss or displacement of culture and tradition throughout generations and because of assimilation. Through my work, I aim to preserve and honor the rich heritage of my ancestors while also exploring the complexities of cultural identity in the modern world. By sharing my point of view, I hope to inspire others to reconnect with their own roots and appreciate the beauty of cultural diversity.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-rounded\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" src=\"https:\/\/eastbaycreativelab.org\/staging-juniorce\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/YaelLevy-150x150.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3421\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading tw-mb-0\">Yael Levy<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading job-title\">JCAS Faculty<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p>Yael is&nbsp;a mixed media artist, storyteller, printmaker and art teacher based in Berkeley, CA.&nbsp;She believes&nbsp;the creative process to be its own reward and the act of making an incredible tool for healing and growing.&nbsp;Yael was born and raised in Israel, and first moved to New York City in 2002 to attend the Art Students League of New York, later she completed a BFA of Illustration from Parsons the New School for Design (2011). After four years doing design and illustrations for The Unemployed Philosophers Guild, she moved to California to pursue an MFA in Comics at CCA (2017). In recent years she&#8217;s been a Teaching Artist with Kala Art Institute, Richmond Art Center and JCC of the East Bay and most recently JCAS. Her work has been published by The Nib (2018), Birdy Magazine (2019), Forward Comix (2017 &amp; 2020) and The Baylies (2021).<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-rounded\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" src=\"https:\/\/eastbaycreativelab.org\/staging-juniorce\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_0870-1-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1527\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading tw-mb-0\">Tammy Mercer<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading job-title\">JCAS Faculty<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p>Since 2013, Tammy has been a vital member of our staff, working in various positions including Assistant Teacher, Long-Term Substitute Teacher, and Extended Day Program Enrichment Coordinator. She returns this year to bring new energy to our Integrated Arts Program. Tammy earned her BA in English Literature from Santa Clara University in 2001 and has previously taught and directed arts-integrated summer programs for Galileo. She lives in Oakland with her spouse, three children, and a dog. Her interests include writing, art and performing and recording music. Her favorite quote? &#8220;Dreams can become reality \u2014 as long as you don&#8217;t sleep through them.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-rounded\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" src=\"https:\/\/eastbaycreativelab.org\/staging-juniorce\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Judit-Navratil-150x150.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4936\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading tw-mb-0\">Judit Navratil<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading job-title\">JCAS Faculty<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p>Judit Navratil is a transdisciplinary artist working with social VR and extended reality in balance with her embodied practices like  somersaulting and tent flying. As an immigrant in various cultures, she explores the potential of phygital care and belonging in compossible spaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Navratil earned an MFA in Painting at the Hungarian University of Fine Arts in 2008 and an MFA at the California College of the Arts in San Francisco in 2019. She has been exhibiting in Hungary, Canada, France, Korea and the Bay Area. Her work has been recognized through awards including the Cadogan Art Award, a residency at Cit\u00e9 Internationale des Arts (Paris) and the Parent Award of Kala Art Institute. Previously she worked in journalism and podcasting spaces &#8211; doing research, editing and audio production &#8211; before moving into sustainability tech, where she managed an Analytics team for a company working to reduce food waste. Spent my early adult life<br>managing an art gallery in Hollywood that dealt with the low brow art scene. My love of food and art led to my next natural career move as a freelance food stylist and then pastry chef in San Francisco.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I became involved with working with children and art when I was hired as the after school art teacher at my daughter&#8217;s grade school. Notably, I&#8217;ve earned acclaim for my award-winning animated short film, and my artwork has graced numerous displays in the Bay Area, reflecting my unique style and versatility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beyond my personal creative pursuits, my true passion lies in mentoring and educating Oakland&#8217;s youth, empowering them to explore their artistic potential across various mediums. Sustained by the art of gathering, Ariel is the founder of exhale. collective, where she co-curates creative wellness spaces in the Bay Area for Black women, femmes and girls to breathe easy and heal, out loud. She has primarily worked with adults and families experiencing behavioral health crises, and contending with social and environmental injustices such as food and housing insecurity and unemployment. Darbi has served as a board member for a variety of community organizations, including Oakland Youth Choir, Oakland Community Development Block Grant (CDBG), Alameda County IHSS Registry and Peers Envisioning &amp; Engaging. She attended Oakland public schools and went to undergrad in San Diego. After which she moved to Japan for a few years. She then obtained a Masters of Science in Molecular Biology from California State East Bay while working at Lawrence Livermore National Labs on the Human Genome Project. Sha is currently working at a Biotech startup in Alameda and can be found walking her dog on the weekends in Jack London Square, around the Lake or one of the parks off Skyline. A longtime resident of Oakland, she holds a BA in Latin American Studies, and an MPA with a public policy focus, which she proudly earned from Cal State Hayward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bicultural and bilingual, in her spare time Rachel enjoys having adventures with family and friends, visiting museums, practicing yoga, and hiking among the redwood groves in the East Bay Regional parks. Over three decades, he\u2019s applied his expertise in bioinformatics and data science to constructing software tools and systems that assist researchers in understanding diseases through the analysis of genetic and molecular data, ultimately to improve patient lives. Dedicated to propelling scientific understanding and technological progress, Altaf leads initiatives designed to elevate the computational proficiencies of research scientists. He is also active in cultivating the upcoming cohort of trailblazers by guiding high school students from underrepresented backgrounds within the realm of science. His aspiration is to ignite their passion for learning, prepare them for higher education and motivate them to pursue careers in STEM fields. He founded The Scholar Athlete Union and Bears Youth Basketball with help from childhood friend Jason Kidd and works very close with Stanford and UC Berkeley faculty to help young people achieve a college education and survive the dangers of the streets. Although Susan\u2019s undergraduate program at University of California, Berkeley, included a Pi Beta Phi and an English major, her career pathway led elsewhere. After several years at Bank of America, Susan developed a passion for biology. Susan received a second Bachelor\u2019s Degree in Biology, and a Ph.D. in Plant Physiology from the University of California, Berkeley. Marriage, three post-doctoral positions in Plant Physiology, Molecular Biology, and Biochemistry of chlorophyll biosynthesis paralleled the birth of three daughters. Susan spent 25 years as Professor of Biology at Mills College. She received a Ph.D. in Psychology from the California School of Professional Psychology. Caroline worked over 30 years in private clinical psychology practice in 3 countries: United States, Canada, and England. For several years, she ran a Head Start program in Rodeo, focusing on low-income families of diverse backgrounds. At the end of her working career, Caroline had a private practice in Berkeley and Pleasant Hill, and was a Supervisor at the West Coast Children\u2019s Clinic in the Fruitvale district in Oakland. Her work always included children and adolescents, along with adults. She retired from active practice in 2012.
