After-school Classes

FALL AFTER-SCHOOL CLASSES

Sept. 17 – Nov. 22 2024

Create and explore with us after-school! Our classes are engaging hands-on fun for young artists, makers, and inventors aged 6-13. Classes are small, student-centered experiences where youth can build skills, experiment with a variety of media, and connect with their creative selves. 

All classes take place at 558 Bellevue Ave. Oakland, CA.

Registration opens on Friday, 8/2 at 2:00 PM

Registration closes on Friday, 9/13 at 4:00 PM

Classes Offered:

Carpentry

Tuesdays 4:30-6:30 PM 9/17-11/19
Ages 6-13 $200-$350

Students will learn to use a complement of hand tools during a course that emphasizes safe tool use, practical problem solving and creative development. Projects increase in difficulty as experience grows. Students will begin with projects such as a small toy boat and work up to full-sized furniture and professional skateboards.
**All first-time carpentry students MUST attend the first day of class to safely participate in the course.**

Teen Drawing Workshop

Tuesdays 4:00-6:00 PM 9/17-11/19
Ages 12-17 $175-$300 sliding scale

Led by a professional artist, this weekly after-school drawing class is designed specifically for teens. Student artists will engage in creative projects that challenge their imagination and encourage personal expression. Approaching the work through themes that are relevant to their experiences, young artists will explore a variety of drawing techniques, media, and contemporary art practices. Students will be encouraged to develop their technical and conceptual skills in a welcoming environment.

Virtual World Building

Tuesdays 4:00-5:30 PM 9/17-11/19
Ages 11-13 $200-$350 sliding scale

Students create a social virtual space that is accessible with or without VR headsets and can be continuously used in further online presentations/gatherings. We weave various disciplines and techniques (sound, photo, animation, drawing, painting, sculpting) by using simple digital tools (Photoshop, Adobe Fresco, CoSpaces). No previous knowledge is required.

Showstoppers

Wednesdays 4:00-6:00 PM 9/18 – 11/20
Ages 9-12 $175-$300 sliding scale

Showstoppers is a theater class. Collectively we will build a play together. Students will learn about themes, storyline, and character development. We will build props, paint backdrops, and create costumes.  Will perform on stage the play we created and developed. This exciting class has many modes of art making and creating. If you have a show stopper in your family unit sign them up, they will love this class!!!

The Material Multiverse

Wednesdays 3:30-5:00 PM 9/18-11/20
Ages 6-9 $175-$300

Join us in the Material Multiverse where you can be a printmaker, textile artist, sculptor, painter, and a bookmaker. Discover new ways to express yourself using a myriad of exciting art materials. Experiment with new techniques including weaving, zine making, watercolor marbling and more.

Comics & Zines

Thursdays 4:00-6:00 PM 9/19 – 11/21
Ages 10-13 $175-$325

Students will dive into the process, tools and technique for creating their own graphic stories and characters. They will learn how to use different text/image relationships, expression, and layouts to bring their stories to life. From writing, through sketching to inking students will follow the unique process of comics to tap into their own creativity and explore new exciting ways to bring stories to life. Students will learn the hands-on processes and techniques of paper folding and art books as objects. Students will make their own limited edition creations in the spirit of small run independent publications and art books.

Intro to Sewing

Thursdays 4:00-5:30 PM 9/19 – 11/21
Ages 10-13 $175-$325

Students will learn the basics of sewing. They will learn how to sew by hand and by machine.They will learn about different materials/fabrics. We will go over how to read/use a pattern and how to alter a pattern. They will learn how to properly take measurements. Students will craft and sew a couple of basic items, such as a tote bag, a t-shirt, and many more!

SLIDING SCALE PRICING

All JCAS classes are made available to families on a sliding scale. Families choose the amount they are able to pay, considering the top end of our scale is how much it costs us to run the class. We encourage families to help support our efforts to make programs available to those in need.

REFUND POLICY

JCAS enrollment is non-transferable. That said, we do understand that sometimes your family schedule changes! We offer a one-time enrollment transfer for your child to another week of class that has spaces available free of charge.

In the event you need to cancel your child’s enrollment, we offer the following refunds:
All purchases include a 10% non-refundable deposit to cover administrative costs.
From 8/2 – 8/25, you will receive a 90% refund.
From 8/26 – 9/10, you will receive a 40% refund.
From 9/11 on, we are not able to offer any refunds.

ACTIVE now offers self-cancelations! If you need to cancel your registration for any reason, log in to your ACTIVE account, locate the registration you wish to cancel, and select ‘cancel’.
