Fall 2023 After-school Classes

FALL AFTER-SCHOOL CLASSES

Sept. 12 – Dec. 8 2023

Create and explore with us after-school! Our classes are engaging hands-on fun for young artists, makers, and inventors aged 6-13. Classes are small, student-centered experiences where youth can build skills, experiment with a variety of media, and connect with their creative selves.

All classes take place at out Temporary HQ, 1224 Harrison St. Oakland, CA.

Classes Offered:

Virtual World Building

Tuesdays, 9/12-11/28, 4:00-5:30PM
Ages 11-13, $150-$350

Students create a social virtual space that is accessible with or without VR headsets and can be continuously used in further online presentations/gatherings. We weave various disciplines and techniques (sound, photo, animation, drawing, painting, sculpting) by using simple digital tools (Photoshop, Adobe Fresco, Mozilla Hubs). No previous knowledge is required. The aim of this class is to give teens and youth a compass for navigating our digital world.

The Material Multiverse

Wednesdays, 9/13-11/29, 3:30-5:00 PM
Ages 7-10, $125-$325

Join us in the Material Multiverse where you can be a printmaker, textile artist, sculptor, painter, and a bookmaker. Discover new ways to express yourself using a myriad of exciting art materials. Experiment with new techniques including weaving, zine making, watercolor marbling and more.

Carpentry

Fridays, 9/29 -12/8, 4:30-6:30 PM
Ages 6-13, $150-$350

Students will learn to use a complement of hand tools during a course that emphasizes safe tool use, practical problem solving and creative development. Projects increase in difficulty as experience grows. Students will begin with projects such as a small toy boat and work up to full-sized furniture and professional skateboards. **All first-time carpentry students MUST attend the first day of class to safely participate in the course.**

SLIDING SCALE PRICING

All JCAS classes are made available to families on a sliding scale. Families choose the amount they are able to pay, considering the top end of our scale is how much it costs us to run the class. We encourage families to help support our efforts to make programs available to those in need.

If the sliding scale prices are still out of your family’s budget, please email us at [email protected] for financial aid. All requests for financial aid must be made before August 29th.
